When should I Spring Clean?

Did you know that the origin of spring cleaning goes as far back as the Iranian Nowruz period, or the Persian New Year which falls on the first day of Spring and is known as Khaneh Tekani – literally 'shaking the house'? It's also linked to various religious festivals such as the Festival of the Passover in Judaism. In the Catholic Church spring cleaning is done on Maundy Thursday and in Orthodox nations it's done immediately before or during the first week of the Great Lent. In Scotland and Japan, 'Spring' cleaning is done prior to the start of the New Year.

More recently, in the 19th Century, March was considered the best time for cleaning the home as it was warm enough for windows to be opened and for the high winds to blow dust and toxic chemicals out of the home.

What are the Benefits of Spring Cleaning?

A better night's sleep is just one of the benefits of Spring Cleaning. Having a clear and clean bedroom allows you to fully relax and wake up in a more positive frame of mind. Other benefits include reduced stress levels as the process of cleaning allows your mind to switch off for a while, it improves your immune system as you are getting rid of natural pollutants including dust and mites as well as chemical pollutants within your home.

Spring cleaning gives you a sense of purpose and achievement, boosting your natural endorphins and energy levels too. Being in a clean and tidy space has also been found to increase levels of creativity and productivity enabling you to zoom through that to do list.

What should I use to Clean my Home?

Wherever possible, use natural and eco-friendly products which reduce the impact on the environment and the number of toxins in your home. Essential oils, baking soda and white vinegar are great for making you own cleaning products and Jodie from between-green.com has these, along with some incredible ready made eco friendly solutions for your cleaning needs too.

What is the difference between Cleaning and Decluttering?

Cleaning is reducing the harmful particles from your home whereas decluttering is reducing the number of your possessions you own by deciding on those items you no longer find beautiful or useful. Decluttering also has a positive impact on both your mental and physical well-being.

Ideally, prior to tackling a deep clean, you should take on the clutter first.

How do I Declutter?
I need to declutter the house is far too big a project to set yourself in one go. I would suggest

• Concentrate on a small area first ie a drawer/cupboard.

• Set a timer (preferably not on your phone as the temptation to check messages etc as a way of putting off your task) for the amount of time you have allocated yourself

• If you are doing an hour or more, set your timer for 15 mins before the end of your allocated time. Use these 15 mins to tidy up, sort the recycling and load the car for the charity shop

• Ask a friend round to help you declutter your wardrobe – make it fun! Have a laugh at the clothes you've kept over the years and the changes in fashion

• When looking and feeling an item, ask yourself how it makes you feel. Do you smile when you look at it or feel warm inside from the memory? If so, put it on display rather than in a cupboard

• Have a positive mindset. Think of it as passing things on for others to enjoy rather than throwing it away.
