My Story

My journey to a clutter free life

I’m Janine, a down-to earth, fun-loving mum of two from Manchester. I’m passionate about helping people to clear out the clutter from their homes and minds, leaving them free to enjoy a better quality of life.

I have a Decluttering Your Home Masterclass diploma, along with experience, enthusiasm, energy and patience. I can help you to get unstuck. I understand how easy it is to get into a situation where clutter begins to get out of hand and takes over your house and life. I was a successful bank manager - in charge of the Flagship Branch in Northern Ireland and subsequently in charge of a team of 67 people. I loved my job. As a people person, I enjoyed supporting my team and helping the customers. Then banking changed - it became target driven and lost the personal element. Increasingly unrealistic demands were being placed on myself and my team from the management above. The pressure was ridiculous and it took its toll on my mental health. I was off sick with depression, then made redundant and I lost my confidence. I stopped dealing with things, piled everything into the spare room and the clutter just grew. The mental weight of all the stuff was eating me alive!

I realised I was in a rut and I knew that I needed to make a change. I reached out for help and I began to make progress – one step at a time. In de-cluttering my home, my mind also became clearer and my confidence started to come back. I started to help friends with their de-cluttering and it gave me a feeling of self-worth again. Then, when I was looking for a new job, it struck me that I could start my own business helping others to get out of a rut too and I set up Clear the Clutter Now! I love it!

I help people go from being overwhelmed to being motivated and inspired. I love seeing the transformation in them from closed body language and folded arms to smiles and even laughter, as their confidence and self-worth increases. When we unpick the issues behind the clutter, it puts them back in control and they feel empowered to make changes for themselves. I’m also there to support, encourage and motivate. I’m all about positivity and problem solving and I’m always coming up with ideas for free storage solutions, using things people already have in their homes.

When it comes to de-cluttering family homes, I get the children involved too. I make up fun games and challenges to get them on board and help them to develop more effective habits. If I can introduce fun, enjoyment and satisfaction into the de-cluttering process, families are more likely to make a longer-term transformation.

I’m so passionate about what I do, that I’ve become an international speaker on the subject! I’ve addressed a group in Galway, Ireland and the networking group, Mums in Business International, which has 67,000 members in 140 countries. I’ve been guest speaker at networking events across the country, been interviewed on the radio and also featured on a number of podcasts, talking about the positive impact decluttering has on your well-being. I love hearing from listeners that I’ve inspired them.
